Paper Abstract
Several initiatives to develop intra-european high-speed railway services for freight have failed till now. This has been due to technical but also to organizational problems. This paper deals with the results of a study performed with the Netherlands as a starting point. The study has aimed at defining actions to be taken by the Dutch government to overcome these problems and to develop a concept of high-speed freight transport by rail further.
In trying to deal with the problems in the field of mobility and environment there is a strong feeling within Eur0~ that intermodal transport can be part of the solution. At the moment high-speed rail transport mainly concerns passenger transport. The further development of a trans-European high-speed rail network will give the opportunity to look for other markets. One of these markets could be the high-speed transport of freight.
